National Guacamole Day is September 16, but this crowd-pleasing classic is perfect for tailgate parties and potlucks all season long. Look for Florida avocados from now until January, and get creative with garnishes. At Cocina 214 in Winter Park, those add-ons include mango, blue cheese and habanero peppers, but the possibilities are endless. Their basic recipe is below.
Cocina 214 Guacamole
6 avocados, halved, seeded and peeled
¼ medium red onion, diced
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 jalapeño, seeded and diced
1 Roma tomato, seeded and diced
1 teaspoon coarse salt
1 lime, juiced
Scoop the avocados into a large stainless steel mixing bowl. Add the freshly squeezed lime juice and coat the avocados. Fold in the remaining ingredients and mash them all together. Let mixture sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, then serve with tortilla or plantain chips.
