Broiled Maine Lobster Tail

Edible Orlando got a taste of Magical Dining Month 2018, and with more than 100 restaurants participating Aug. 24-Sept. 30, our best advice is to plan ahead, book some reservations and be adventurous for 38 days.

Visit Orlando hosted a dinner at Big Fin Seafood Kitchen on Restaurant Row, where we ordered from the Magical Dining menu: either a generous 8-ounce Maine lobster tail, a buttery 8-ounce filet mignon, kicky shrimp Orleans or a crisp pile of deep-fried shrimp, scallops and catfish – all beyond satisfying, but we agreed that the perfectly cooked lobster tail was the hands-down winner. (And that same lobster tail, with fresh green beans and mashed potatoes, is $34 on the regular menu – therein lies the value of MDM.) We paired it with a half-dozen fresh Texas oysters to start, part of MDM (and $15 on the regular menu). A fine bargain.

Shrimp Orleans

Entrées are paired with a starter and a sweet – all included in the $35 prix fixe dinners (plus tax and gratuity). And indulge happily, knowing that $1 from each meal benefits two local charities: Best Buddies and Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida.

Choosing where to go may be the hardest decision, with restaurants all across Central Florida – Winter Park, downtown, the attractions’ areas, all the way to Mount Dora (where 1921 by Norman Van Aken is worth the drive).
