4 Classes Designed to Up Your Garden Savvy

Not everyone is born with a green thumb. In fact, even the experts have taken a course or two. Let’s face it, there is a science to gardening success and any knowledge you can glean to help you avoid aggravating pitfalls or a failed harvest will only make growing your own food all the more rewarding and pleasurable. Here are a handful of local classes designed to turn you into the gardening guru you know you’re destined to be!

Cool Season Home Vegetable Garden
This 1-1/2 hour class taught by the UF/IFAS Extension Orange County covers the basics of vegetable gardening in the cool season (October – March). Cost is $4 and advanced registration is required for any of the three dates and locations listed below:

“Work and Learn” Event at Winter Park Urban Farm
This hands-on, basic gardening skills class hosted at the Winter Park Urban Farm (1650 Pine Avenue, Winter Park) will teach how to prepare garden beds for planting, sew seeds, and plant seedlings into flats and into the garden.
This event is free and open to the public.

Organic Vegetable Gardening
Seminole Farm and Nursery (2010 Lake Drive, Casselberry) hosts a bevy of free gardening classes, which take place every Saturday morning from 9am – 10am. A full list of classes, including the Organic Vegetable Gardening class slated for September 14 and October 19, can be viewed HERE. Space is limited.

Plant your Thanksgiving Dinner
This interactive gardening workshop will take place at the Winter Park Presbyterian Community Garden on Saturday September 21 from 9-11:00am. Attendees will learn how to prepare a garden bed for fall planting and plant seeds and transplants that will be ready just in time for Thanksgiving dinner. Tia Meer will be leading the ongoing educational workshop while a chef will be fixing up healthy recipes for the recommended crops to grow. Cost is$10 per family.
