Jeremiah’s Italian Ice, based in Orlando, is revealing a new pie-inspired gelati combo every Wednesday in September. “Gelati” can be the plural of “gelato,” but here, it’s the swirl of Italian ice and soft serve ice cream. First came the “Pumpkin Spice Pie” with pumpkin-pie ice, vanilla soft serve and cookie-butter crumbles. Earlier this week, it was the Lemon Meringue Pie with lemon ice, vanilla soft serve and those crumbles. Three more in the Pie Series will be announced Sept. 15, 22 and 29 on Jeremiah’s social media and the J-List Rewards app. The first Jeremiah’s Italian Ice location opened in Winter Park in 1996 with 75 locations now open or coming soon around the U.S.
Virginia Drive Live! is back in the Ivanhoe District, 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11. Ten food and drink vendors will stage pop-up shops along Virginia Dr., with more than 20 artists and other merchants. That’s everything from local tradition The Vegan Hot Dog Cart to the boozy cupcakes of Ria’s Smashcakes. On top of all that, you can buy $5 wristbands at Ten10 Brewing or The Yard at Ivanhoe that get you specials at 15 Ivanhoe Village businesses including Thirsty Topher, Ivanhoe Park Brewing, Grape & the Grain, and Santiago’s Bodega. Virginia Drive Live! is a partnership between Ivanhoe Village and the Mills50 District.
While we’re in the Ivanhoe District, the Florida IPA Challenge kicks off Friday, Sept. 10 at GB’s Bottle Shop. They’ll put a mystery sampler of six India Pale Ales in front of you and you’ll be the judge. GB’s will do the same with new IPAs on the weekends of Sept 17 and 24. Then on Oct. 1, the mystery tasting will be semi-finalists from the previous three weeks. GB’s will announce the winning beer and brewery on Sunday, Oct. 3, the shop’s fifth anniversary. Each sampler is available starting at 3 p.m. on that Friday and goes until the kegs are dry.
Hourglass Brewing and Chef Jill Holland
Drink some great beers, eat some great food, and do some good! On Wednesday, Sept. 15, Hourglass Brewing and Chef Jill Holland will host a night of flights and bites, benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida Culinary Training Program. It’s a five-course tasting menu at the Sourglass Brewing taproom in Longwood. Two of the tasty courses will be a duck breast slider paired with the fruity/spicy dark ale La Fee Dragée and fresh tuna poke salad with farmhouse ale Saison Du Sablier. Tickets are $50. The Second Harvest Culinary Training Program provides disadvantaged adults with the culinary training needed to pursue a career in the food industry.
National Guacamole Day is Sept. 16, which is perfect because Florida avocados are in season right now. We’ve seen versions that jazz up guac with everything from bacon to peaches to kale to goat cheese, but here’s a traditional take from Winter Park’s Cocina 214. Coincidentally, National Guacamole Day is on Thursday this year. That’s also Thankful Thursday at Cocina 214. Every Thursday, Central Florida frontline and healthcare workers get 10% off food purchases. On Teacher Tuesday, Cocina 214 gives teachers a free “214” margarita, frozen or on the rocks, when they buy an entrée.
