Fun Food Events for May 28-June 3: Memorial Day in Orlando

Memorial Day in Orlando — with all those picnics and cookouts — have got us thinking about burgers. Whether you buy a box of frozen patties or order short rib blend from your local butcher – it just feels like time to grill out. That burger up top is from Knife Burger, the new poolside burger joint by celeb chef John Tesar at JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes. You can read more in the Resort Report from the latest print edition of Edible Orlando magazine.

Every week is a good week for food fun around Central Florida. Read on for five ways to enjoy Memorial Day in Orlando and all the week has to offer in the next seven days. Thanks to local writer John Graham for finding the best bets.

Bob’s Burgers, Chili Cook-Off

The Fox animated comedy Bob’s Burgers has a running gag with punny names for the burger of the day – like “Poutine on the Ritz” and “Chipotle Off the Old Block.” The Bob’s Burgers Movie is in theaters this weekend and to celebrate, a pop-up restaurant outside AMC DINE-IN Disney Springs will be giving away vegan/vegetarian Impossible Foods burgers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The “Get This Plant Patty Started” burger is a little spicy with sriracha and minced pepperoncini. The same burger was dished out at the Hollywood movie premiere in partnership with John Roberts, the voice actor who plays Linda Belcher in the movie and TV show.

Sunday, WiseGuys Lounge in DeBary is running both a cook-out and a chili cook-off. Starting at 3 p.m., $10 gets you all the chili, hamburgers, hot dogs and corn on the cob you can handle. All chili teams must include a beer from DeBary’s Central 28 Brewing Company in their recipes. You can also find Central 28 in Edible Orlando’s Artisan Guide, a great place to find Central Florida folks making delicious food and drink in small batches with quality ingredients.

Memorial Day

Monday marks Memorial Day, both the unofficial start of summer and a federal holiday for recognizing United States military personnel who died while serving in the armed forces. As you enjoy the sunshine and cookouts, please also remember and honor those who aren’t here with us.

The Ravenous Pig gastropub and brewery is usually closed on Mondays, but the outdoor beer garden will be open noon to 5 p.m. for Memorial Day. That includes a whole hog barbecue, Lardermelon (golden ale with watermelon purée) on tap, and the release of session IPA Zamba #5. Pets are welcome and there’s live music, 2-5 p.m. If you’re a lacrosse fan, staff promise the men’s national championship on the TVs.

Over in Tavares, west of Mount Dora, Fish Camp on Lake Eustis will be doing Memorial Day specials on Chesapeake Bay oysters ($16.99 a dozen), Cedar Key middleneck clams ($16.99 for 25) and $12.99 domestic beer buckets. Eric Groves will play live on the patio, 2-5 p.m.

Peach Truck, Wine Quest

Florida peach season is just ending, so now, it’s Georgia and South Carolina that have the freshest stone fruit. In fact, this week would be a good time to place orders with The Peach Truck – a refrigerated semi that will deliver 25-pound boxes of freshly-picked peaches to Central Florida on June 18 and 19. (You can order up to five days before delivery, but why push it?) If you think you can’t eat 25 – or even 50 – pounds of peaches, think beyond jam and pie. How about chutney, salsa, French toast, short ribs, fritters, blintzes, grilled cheese (with bacon), bread pudding, or pork loin? All recipes on (That’s also how you check when a truck will be near you.)

Wine Quest is the big annual fundraiser for Quest, Inc. and you can enjoy it two different ways this coming Friday and Saturday night, June 3 and 4, at Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando. You probably can’t physically taste all 200+ wines and spirits in one evening, 7-10 p.m., but that’s what’s available for the Friday grand tasting with hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are $150. Saturday, tickets are $295 for the premiere dining experience, a multi-course meal with fine wine pairings, 6 – 10 p.m. Both nights are cocktail attire and you must be 21+. Quest, Inc. is a non-profit that helps adults and children with developmental disabilities through services to increase capabilities and quality of life.
