Orlando’s newest food truck, Tamale Co., will debut on Friday, December 6 at the Big Box of Orlando Holiday Pop Up Shop. The brainchild of Jennifer and Fernando Tamayo, this mobile eatery will feature a menu of 10 tamales, including two dessert and two vegetarian options.
“These are a family tradition, something we do every Christmas,” says Jennifer, who hails from Mexico City. “We started planning about two years ago with the idea of having tamales throughout the whole year.”
The Tamayos begin their tamales by grinding corn and mixing it into masa, a gluten-free dough made from corn. “Then we fill them with everything from meats to fruits and vegetables and roll them up in the corn husks and steam them. The whole process takes about four hours per batch. These are gourmet tamales.”
Besides the permanent menu, Tamale Co. will introduce a new flavor each week and allow Facebook fans to vote.
Attendees of this Friday’s Preview Party will receive a free tamale with paid admission. “We’ll be giving away 600 tamales on Friday,” Jennifer says. “Then you’ll be able to find us at the Food Truck Bazaars and also at the Lake Mary Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.”
Besides sampling Tamale Co. fare, guests of the pop up shop can kick-start their holiday shopping thanks to the more than 30 merchants that have stocked the shop’s shelves at Orange Studio (1121 N Mills Ave, Orlando), including local merchants and artisans like 9th Letter Press, Wondermade marshmallows and Lineage Roasting The shop accepts credit cards only.
Admission to the Preview Party (6pm-12am) is $10 and offers early-access to the merch. There will be beer and wine, a coffee bar, a cupcake bar, and a live DJ.
A portion of ticket sales goes to Saving Grace in Uganda.
