Nathan and Jenn Clark initially made homemade marshmallows in 2010 as a fun Christmas gift. “We weren’t looking to start a company, but after we made our first batch, we realized that they were so much better than anything we had ever bought at the store,” Nathan shares. Little did they know, they would sell millions of marshmallows in just a few short years.
Wondermade Dessert Café
Now, over a decade later, they have Wondermade Dessert Café in historic Sanford, which sells both marshmallows and ice cream, including some flavors exclusive to the store. They also have a thriving online business with nationwide and selective worldwide shipping as well as wholesale partners. Plus, they’ve been featured in Martha Stewart’s magazine and on her website, even meeting the mogul herself.
Of their storefront, Nathan says, “We live in downtown Sanford, and so, we wanted to have the kind of store we would love to see here.” He also uses the space as the commercial kitchen for their endeavor, where just a handful of ingredients line the shelves (no preservatives or artificial colors or flavors).
Additionally, as a way to offer a hands-on experience to Wondermade customers, the brick-and-mortar offers tours and private events, including Family Workshops and Couples Date Night Workshops. “I don’t want people to just love our marshmallows,” he adds. “I want to inspire them to make their own.”
Fall Marshmallow Flavors
Over the years, the couple has created more than 130 flavors. You can add the taste of fall to your hot cocoa or s’mores with the Fall Flavors set, which includes Apple Cinnamon (pictured above), Pumpkin Pie, Chai, and Salted Honey. With 16 marshmallows in each box, you’ll have enough for everyone! They also offer non-seasonal flavors, like Bourbon (their most popular choice), Birthday Cake, Key Lime Pie, and more.
Thanks to their Taste Adventure Club, purchasers can enjoy two boxes of marshmallows in unique flavors each month. Past offerings have been Chocolate Mint, Cinnamon, and Lavender. As the holidays quickly approach, a three-month subscription makes for the perfect gift — either for yourself or a loved one. As Nathan explains, “I think people love our product because it lets [them]be a part of the story. You always want a gift you give or a treat you share to be something more, and our marshmallows end up creating a memory, not just a moment.”
