Fun Food Events for April 1-7

Here are some quick tips for fun food events this week, including Solar Bears Food Festival, Spring Soiree for Edible Ed, and more.

Hard boiled eggs are part of both Easter and Passover Seder, a handy bit of breakfast during Ramadan, and just a useful ingredient to have around. If you’ve got some spares rolling around that fridge door compartment, check out EdibleOrlando.com and the recipe for Rising Sun Deviled Eggs. They’re a Japanese spin on a brunchy classic.

Edible Orlando writer John Graham has cooked up our weekly list of the five fun food best bets in the week ahead, Saturday to Friday.

Hockey Chow, Cookie Class

What goes with ice hockey better than tacos, soul food, and locally brewed beer? Saturday, the Orlando Solar Bears Food Festival hits Church Street in front of Amway Center, 4 – 6:30 p.m. A $30 ticket gets you into the food fest and the 7 p.m. game against the Jacksonville Icemen inside the AdventHealth Rink. Vendors at the fest include Seana’s Caribbean Soul Food, Sonny’s BBQ, Ivanhoe Park Brewing, Cholo Dogs and Zootz Munchies. To sit in some sections for the game, you may pay extra.

This Sunday, and every other Sunday, Goo-oui Cookies in SoDo teaches a making and baking class at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The $40 lesson is limited to eight students per class and is aimed at both newbies and skilled bakers. The class topic changes seasonally, but for now, it’s stuffed cookies. If Sunday’s classes are filled up, they’ll do it again on April 16 and April 30. Tickets go on sale the Monday before each Sunday class. Monday through Saturday, Goo-oui sells cookies such as the Fred (Fruity Pebbles mixed in the dough, stuffed with marshmallow crème) and the Cruella (Oreos and Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Cream in the dough, topped with red white chocolate ganache).

Spring Soiree, Jazz on the Lawn, Soda in Sebring

For once, we know why so many restaurants are closed on a Monday. The Edible Education Experience is bringing together chefs from several Orlando-area hotspots, Monday at 6 p.m., for A Spring Soiree. After a welcome drink and light bites from EEE students, you’ll dive into six family-style courses from Kaya’s Chef Lordfer Lalicon, Cuisiniers‘ Chef Jamie McFadden, Reyes Mezcaleria’s Chef Wendy Lopez, La Tavola’s Chef Kevin Fonzo, Four Seasons Resort Orlando’s Chef Fabrizio Schenardi, and Smoke & Donuts’ Chef Ian Russell, his wife and partner Juliana Peña, and Baking and Pastry Chef Brett Vezina. Money raised from each $250 ticket goes to EEE’s goal of empowering students and communities through seed-to-table experiences.

The Alfond Inn at Rollins College is back with Spring Jazz on the Lawn, Friday, 6 – 9:30 p.m. Local quartet Renderglow handles the jazz while you enjoy unlimited select beer, wine and cocktails. Food stations are manned by The Alfond Inn, Jimmy Hula’s and Firebirds Wood Fired Grill with dessert from Sweet by Holly. Tickets start at $49 (plus fees and tax) for early bird general admission. The lounge afterparty with cash bar and more music goes until 11 p.m.

The fifth annual Sebring Soda Festival is Friday and next Saturday, a chance to sample more than 200 fizzy, bubbly soft drinks from around the world. That’s everything from familiar retro brands such as Moxie and Nehi to unique sodas including Durango Strawberry Rhubarb, Romano’s White Peach Italian Soda, and Cicero Salted Caramel Root Beer. Admission is free, but you’ll need a Soda Tasting Punch Card to sample. Prices vary depending on how many sodas you try, but you can sample eight sodas for $6 (plus fees) up to 48 sodas for $25. Entertainment includes live music, bubble glow party, $10 kids’ zone, Soda Pop Princess Pageant and more. Sebring is about two hours’ drive south of Orlando in Highlands County.
